Controls Engineer

Basic Purpose
This position is responsible for providing comprehensive engineering direction and support to achieve current and future strategic manufacturing capability objectives. This position will design, develop and maintain control systems for industrial automation, including programming PLCs, troubleshooting control systems and collaborating with cross-functional teams to incorporate new 
manufacturing equipment, processes and technology, and drive the continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes.

 

Principal Accountabilities
1. Design, program and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems.
2. Develop and document manufacturing process specifications.
3. Integrate sensors, actuators and other control devices into automation systems.
4. Perform system testing, validation and commissioning of control systems.
5. Research, develop, propose and implement the application of new manufacturing technologies to drive the continuous improvement of current operations and support future strategic manufacturing capability objectives .
6. Interpret equipment specifications and develop appropriate operational practices.
7. Maintain documentation including electrical schematics, control logic and system configurations.
8. Analyze new product designs for manufacturing feasibility and process definition and provide technical assistance in the development of new manufacturing processes.
9. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system performance and reliability.
10. Ensure compliance with all safety standards, codes and regulations.

 

Required Skills, Education, and Experience
▪  Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Control Systems Engineering or a related field required.
▪  Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience in manufacturing (prior work in a unionized environment desired).
▪  Proficiency in PLC programming languages, prior experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens or similar platforms.
▪  Understanding of industrial communication protocols.
▪  Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs.
▪  Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
▪  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office software and engineering design applications.
▪  Working knowledge of industry standards and regulations, including environmental, safety & health compliance regulations.
▪  Proven Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma skills a definite plus.
▪  Ability to effectively interface with internal and external customers and stakeholders at all organizational levels.
